Google Wallet is quickly gaining momentum in the mobile payments world. Large retailers, like Jamba Juice, have already implemented Google Wallet at their point of sale terminals. Smaller retailers are intrigued and asking questions like, “How does a Google Wallet Transaction Work?”

First, let’s start with what is needed from the merchant and customer for a Google Wallet transaction to be successful

To accept Google Wallet transactions, the merchant must have a contactless reader (such as MasterCard Pay Pass), or a terminal that is ISO 1443 or 18092 compliant. Look for the universal contactless symbol.

Customers need Android phones with a NFC (near field communication) chip, and run Android version 2.4 (Gingerbread) or higher.

Currently, Google Wallet supports Citibank MasterCard or a pre-paid Google card. No other cards are supported at this time.

And now, here is how a Google Wallet transaction works.

Ring up the customer’s transaction. The terminals “credit” button may have to be pushed.

Have the customer wave their mobile device over the reader. There should be a distance of about an inch between mobile device and reader.

Reader will light up and beep as card is read. The cash register will show transaction being processed, just as if a physical card was being used.

If the system is set up to print a receipt, a receipt is printed if the transaction was processed successfully (just as if a physical card was used).

Accepting Google Wallet payments is fun and simple to use. Getting started is even easier. Visit www.paymentmax.com for more information.

Everyone in the industry knew this was coming…debit card usage fees, and the slow demise of free checking!

Starting October 1st, 2011 debit card interchange fees were capped by the Federal Government as a result of Section 1075 (Durbin amendment) of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Banks will lose 45% of the $20.5 million paid by retailers to accept debit cards. To make up this loss in revenue, many banks like Bank of America are now charging customers a debit card usage fee. Bank of America charges it’s customers $5/month to use their debit card to make purchases.

There has been public outrage over Bank of America’s decision with bashing from the President to TV anchors cutting up their BofA debit cards on live television. Even some of our own merchants who benefit from the Durbin amendment are upset about debit card usage fees. They are consumers too!

Consumers are likely to quit using their debit cards to avoid the usage fee-will this cause an increase in check writing? I am thinking it might! There are many consumers who dislike using credit cards and prefer to make purchases straight from their checking accounts. Without the convenience of swiping a debit card retailers will most likely see an increase in check payments.

The Samsung Infuse 4G smartphone with it’s super thin body and fast processing times has become quite the hit with our merchants who process credit and debit cards on-the-go. The Infuse is also a favorite among independent stylists who accept payments at their station.

Here are some benefits of accepting credit and debit with the AT&T Samsung Infuse 4G.

Low processing rates-The Infuse is compatible with the ROAMpay swipe. Transactions that are physically swiped cost less than keyed-in transactions.

Accept payments anywhere-The Infuse, PaymentMax merchant account, and the ROAMpay app gives merchants the ability to accept all major credit and debit cards where ever their customers are. ROAMpay can also accept payments offline. Sales will never be lost because of connection issues.

Easy, user friendly interface-The Infuse has the largest Samsung touch screen, and mobile credit card processing apps, like ROAMPay are simple to use.

Fast set-up-After merchant account approval (typically 24 hours) and a quick download of the processing app, merchants can start accepting payments immediately.

The newly released Nexus S 4G (available through Sprint) is the first phone to be compatible with Google Wallet, a mobile payment application that allows users to make purchases with their NFC (near field communication) embedded phones.

Now that the Nexus S 4G is readily available, we have received tons of questions about Google Wallet, pricing, equipment, and security. Here are a few of the most popular questions and answers.

1. How much does Google Wallet cost? Google wallet is free. Merchants accepting payment via Google Wallet will not incur any extra fees. Google Wallet payments are considered card present transactions.

2. What equipment do I need? A contactless terminal. Terminals that are ISO 144403 and 18092 standard and carry the universal contactless symbol are compatible.

3. Is Google Wallet secure? Yes. Google Wallet utilizes a chip called the secure element for security. The secure element is isolated from the phone’s operating system and hardware. Only authorized programs like Google Wallet can access the secure element to initiate payment. Google Wallet is also PIN based. Payment initiation can not begin until the Google Wallet PIN number is entered.
